Overview

[123I]-ADAM is a radiopharmaceutical small molecule used as a diagnostic imaging agent for Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT). It specifically binds to the serotonin transporter (SERT), allowing for the visualization and quantification of SERT availability in various brain regions, including the midbrain, medial temporal lobe, and basal ganglia. Developed and utilized in research at the University of Pennsylvania, it serves as a molecular imaging tool to investigate serotonergic dysfunction in psychiatric conditions. In the context of major depressive disorder (MDD), it has been employed to monitor changes in transporter binding density before and after therapeutic interventions, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), to better understand the biological mechanisms of treatment response.
